Sweden: Big Dutchman equips welfare-friendly layer house
Some assembly required: The Wonderful Everyday for hens
Someone once said that Big Dutchman is basically the world’s largest furniture store for poultry. So it’s only fitting that the poultry equipment supplier recently had the chance to equip another welfare-friendly poultry house in the furniture stronghold of Sweden. Offering lots of fresh air, farm-grown feed and free ranges.
With their farm by the idyllic and well-known Vättern lake, the Sturesson family show that one thing you need for successful egg production is courage. The farming family have been keeping free-range hens since 1998 – an unusual management choice at the time. The hens can peck, preen themselves and scratch in a litter made of sand and wood shavings.
Following the addition of a new house with Big Dutchman equipment, 110,000 happy hens now live on the farm. The Sturesson family prove that sustainability and profitability can go hand in hand – if you’re courageous enough.
Apart from egg production and arable farming, the farming family also keep Charolais and Red Angus cattle. And they generate power from wind energy.
Dear Sturessons, thank you for the trust you placed in us and for your hospitality – including inviting the Big Dutchman team to breakfast with crispbread and fresh eggs!
